Track 22: Listening Test for Unit 9

[R = Richard; J = Jan]

J:               I need a good book to read on holiday. Have you read any good books lately, Richard?

R:               Yeah. I’m reading a brilliant book at the moment, actually. ‘Atonement’, by Ian McEwan.

J:               Oh. I’ve heard of that. It was made into a film, wasn’t it?

R:               That’s right. It was really successful. Who was in it? Kiera Knightly, and – who’s that guy? The Scottish actor? James McAvoy. Have you seen it?

J:               No. Have you?

R:               No. I wanted to see the film, but my sister suggested that I should read the book first. She said that the film was good, but the book was better. She said she hadn’t read such a good book in ages, and it made her cry because it was so sad.

J:               Oh. What’s the story?

R:               Well, I’ve only just started reading it, but basically the story is that two people are in love, but because of a lie someone tells as a child, there is a big misunderstanding and the two main characters are separated, and their lives change for ever.

J:                So, it’s a romantic story – a love story?

R:                Well, it’s more than that. It’s a love story, but it’s not really that romantic, because a lot of the story takes place in France and England during the war, and terrible things happen. I can’t tell you any more, because it will spoil the story for you.

J:                Are you going to see the film?

R:               I’m not sure whether I want to see it now. I never like seeing a film after I’ve read the book. It’s always disappointing. But maybe you could see the film before you read the book?

J:                Good idea. And can I borrow your copy when you’ve finished?

R:               Sure. I’ve only got a hundred and thirty pages to go!
