WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE A BUYER
1. I am feeling insecure. I am not sure I know how to detect which of the finalists is the genius, and which is just good. I have exhausted my abilities to make technical distinctions.
2. I am feeling threatened. This is my area of responsibility, and even though intellectually I know I need outside expertise, emotionally it is not comfortable to put my affairs in the hands of others.
3. I am taking a personal risk. By putting my affairs in the hands of someone else, I risk losing control.
4. I am impatient. I did not call someone at the first sign of symptoms (or opportunity). I have been thinking about this for a while.
5. I am worried. By the very fact of suggesting improvements or changes, these people goint to be implying that I have not been doing it right up till noe. Are these people going to on my side?
6. I am exposed. Whoever I hire I am going to have to reveal some proprietary secrets, non all of which are flattering. I will have to undress.
7. I am feeling ignorant, and do not like the feeling. I do not know if I have got a simple problem or a complex one. I am not sure I can trust them to be honest about that: it is in their interest to convince me it is complex.
8. I am skeptical. I have been burned before by this kind of people. You get a lot of promises: How should I know whos promise I should buy?
9. I am concerned that they either can not or will not take the time to understand what makes my situation special. They will try to sell me what they have got rather than what I need.
10. I am suspicious. Will they be the typical professionals who are hard to get hold of, who are patronizing, who leave you out of the loop, who befuddle you with jargon, who do not explain what they are doing or why, who..., who..., who...? In short, will these people deal with me in the way I want to be dealth with?
