Introduction
When building a Fighter, one has to have a military mindset. The Fighter is the heavy infantry
of the party. The Fighters do all of the heavy lifting and are support for Spell casters, who are
artillery pieces.
When creating a character in the Fighter class, there are both advantages and disadvantages in
each race. These are ranked them according to their advantages and disadvantages from most
playable to least playable.
#1: Human:
• Advantages:
o Bonus feat at irst level (very nice for adding attack bonuses or damage
bonuses)
o Four additional skill points and one additional skill point per level
o Base movement of 30 feet
• Disadvantages:
o No characteristic bonus or bonus in vision.
o The irst order of business for human characters is always to look for a
reliable light source

#2: Dwarf:
• Advantages:
o +2 constitution (+1 on all hit point rolls and fortitude saves)
o Dark vision – 60 feet (no need for an extra light source)
o Numerous bonuses for Dwarven skills (see players handbook for more
details)
o Fighter is the favored class of the Dwarfs – it is a great building block for a
multi-class character (discussion for another supplement)
• Disadvantages:
o Lack of mobility (only a 20 foot base land speed)
o -2 on charisma (almost a non-factor except in some skill rolls (8 total) and
some spells (not a concern of ighters))
#3: Half Orc:
• Advantages:
o Additional +2 strength (+1 attack and damage) at the start
o 30 foot base land speed
o Bonus of dark vision of 60 feet.
• Disadvantages:
o -2 intelligence (which really hurts in skill choices and skill checks)
o -2 charisma (hurts skill checks also) between the two, 15 total skills are

affected.
o Favorite class of the Barbarian (seems like a waste to limit your ½ Orc in the
ighter class)
#4: Elves:
• Advantages:
o +2 on dexterity (translates into +1 on armor class and 8 skills checks, not to
mention the relex saves)
o Low light vision is better than Human vision, but it still needs a light source.
o The 30 foot base land movement is on par with the Humans.
o +2 on spot listen and search checks (all other racial bonuses are per the
Player’s Handbook)
• Disadvantages:
o -2 on constitution (-1 on hit points every level and -1 on fortitude saves)
#5: Gnomes:
• Advantages:
o +2 on constitution (+1 on fortitude saves and +1 on hit points)
o Low light vision
o +1 on armor class due to size
o Racial bonuses are very nice (see Player’s Handbook)
• Disadvantages:
o Lack of strength (-2 on strength = -1 on skills checks involving strength and
-1 on attack and damage)
o Lack of size can limit weapon choices allowing only small or tiny weapons.
o The Bard is a favored class of the Gnome so he is better equipped for this
calling.
o Lack of mobility (only a 20 foot base land speed)

#6: Half Elves:
• Advantages:
o They have some of the Elves immunities.
o Low light vision.
o The 30 foot base land movement is on par with the Humans.
• Disadvantages:
o No characteristic bonus
o Only about ½ of the Elves bonus for listen search spot checks (see Player’s
Handbook)
#7: Halling:
• Advantages:
o +2 on dexterity (translates into +1 on armor class and 8 skills checks, not to
mention the relex saves)

o +1 on armor class due to size
o Halling racial skills (see Player’s Handbook)
• Disadvantages:
o Lack of strength (-2 on strength = -1 on skills checks involving strength and
-1 on attack and damage)
o Lack of size can limit weapon choices allowing only small or tiny weapons.
o Normal vision
o Rogue is the Halling’s favored class (for which they are much better suited.)
o Lack of mobility (only a 20 foot base land speed)
* Please note that all pluses and minuses are based on an ability score of 10 or 11. Their
effective bonus is a + zero.
Before selecting the race of ighter it is best to form a concept of what career path the ighter
character will choose.
The following are three variations of ighter class career paths, including a detailed, step-by-
step guide so that your character will be extremely effective in whatever career path chosen.

THE SHREDDER
The irst ighter career path is the two-legged shredder. Please note that the irst and most
important thing about this path is the minimum of a 15 dexterity score. This option is best only
for the human, half-orc, and dwarven choices of character race. There are two reasons that the
other races do not work as well: limits on size of weapons (Hallings or gnomes) or lack of the
extra feat that a human receives.
The irst downside of this path is that the character is melee focused and sacriices any additions
to range, except dexterity. If this path is selected, the short bow or long bow as a ranged weapon
is recommended. Start with the short bow, due to cost, at the start of the adventuring career.
The second disadvantage is the lack of a shield. A buckler could be carried in order to ight one
handed in the tight spots of the adventure, but that ruins the game plan.
As a irst level ighter the dwarf and the half-orc choose the following feats:
• Weapon focus short sword
• Two-weapon ighting
As a human ighter, you add the following as your free choice
• Two-weapon defense

With the combination of the two feats, the Shredder drops near the bottom of the two-weapon
ighting chart.
The reasons for selecting the short sword over other weapons are as follows:
• The single short sword (1d6) is only 75% as effective versus the long sword (1d8).
But the two short swords together ( 2d6) are 150% more effective than the single long
sword (1d8).
• The short sword, long sword, battle axe, mace, and dagger are some of the most
common magic items you will ind as a irst-level adventurer
• The short sword is a light weapon.

With the previous two items in mind at irst level with a strength score of 14 or 15 the Shredder
gets a total of +2 to hit and damage. Then, add in the +1 with weapon focus along with a irst
level attack bonus of +1. This is a grand total of +4 to hit. However,
the down side is that the two-weapon ighting skill means that a ighter receives a -2 to attack
rolls. Obviously, this reduces a likely hit by 10%, but the Shredder is looking at a maximum
of 8 hit points of damage with the primary hand (1d6+2) and 7 hit points of damage with the
secondary hand (1d6+1) for a grand total of 15 hit points of damage.
Compare this to a single long sword with a +4 to hit (+1 weapon focus, +1 ighter attack bonus,
and +2 with strength) which is a 10% improvement in chance to hit and a maximum damage
of 10 total (1d8+2). There are still advantages to single-weapon ighting that will be detailed
later.
The next choice is the best type of armor for the character. Not only is cost a premium concern,
but so is the possibility of losing the dexterity bonus from a 15 or more.
Therefore, the Chainmail, Chain shirt or Scale mail is recommended to start with.
