The St. Vitus Cathedral at
Prague Castle in the Czech
Republic was begun in 1344
in the Gothic style and was
completed nearly 600 years later
with the west towers and west
façade in the Neo-Gothic style.
This photo shows the marvelous
vaulted ceiling with double diagonal ribs, constructed
in the 1300s. Peter Parler, the architect/engineer, was
23 years old when he designed the cathedral. See more
ancient masonry in the feature article on page 26.

Should Structural Engineers Seek Recognition
?

AnengineerIknowoncesaid,“Thebestthingyoucansayabout
a structural engineer is that you’ve never heard of him”. While I
understandhisreasonsforsayingit,Ihavetorespectfullydisagree.Ifwe
provideasolutionthatrequiresexceptional innovationandcreativity,
whywouldn’twewanttoindawaytocelebratethataccomplishment
andhaveitrecognized?Weshouldwanttopubliclyacknowledgeour
outstanding achievements in solving complex problems, providing
creativedesignsandtechnicalinnovations,and
makingeficientuseofmaterialsandlabor.
One of the ways that we can bring atten-
tiontotheamazingthingswedoistousean
awardsprogramtoeducatethepublicregarding
the contributions of structural engineers to
the built environment and public safety.The
NCSEAExcellenceinStructuralEngineeringawardsprogram,aswell
astheawardsprogramsinvariousstates,areexcellentopportunitiesfor
eachofourirmstodojustthat.
TheNCSEAawardsprogramcelebratesthegreatestachievementsand
recognizes the pre-eminent projects designed by structural engineers,
both in theUnited States and throughout theworld.Our awards
program,which has grown steadily in stature and number of entries
sinceitsinceptionin1998,willhaveexpandedcategoriesthisyear,in
anattempttomakeitpossibleformoreirmstoenterandberecognized
for theirachievements. Included in thesenewcategoriesare“New
Buildingsunder$10Million”inconstructioncosts,“International
Structures”,and“Forensic/Renovation/Retroit/RehabilitationStructures”.

costly;andyourinalproductcanbeused for localmarketingefforts
andpressreleases.Inthisway,youwillalsobehelpingtogettheword
out,inyourowncommunity,abouttheimportantworkofstructural
engineers. If we don’t celebrate and appreciate the accomplishments
of our own profession, how canwe complain if those outside our
professiondon’ttakenotice?
Anotherwaytoadvocateforourprofessionistopromoteourselvesto
ourclients,asavaluedpartoftheteam.WhentheNCSEAAdvocacy/
Clients and Prospects subcommittee did a survey asking structural
engineersfortheirinputonhowourperformanceisperceived,where
wearesuccessful,andwhereweseeourbiggestchallenges,responsesto
thefollowingperceptionswerebothinterestingandworthdiscussing.
•Myclientsarewillingtopaymoretoworkwithmebecausethey
areconidentinmeandvaluemyinput.
•Clientsviewstructuralengineeringservicesasacommodityand
willtendtoselectwhoeveroffersthelowestfee.
Asigniicantnumberofstructuralengineersrespondingtothesurvey
bemoanedourlotinlife,addingcommentsthatrangedfromcomplaining
about clientsusingprice as theonly selection criteria, to clientswho
don’tappreciatethatitrequirestechnicalskilltodowhatwedo.If
wefeelthisway,i.e.,thatweareincreasinglybecomingacommodity
orfeelunderappreciated,whatcanwedo?The
keyistoindawaytobecomeavaluedpartner,
notmerelyavendor.Weneedtobemorepro-
active in determining how tomake ourselves
thesought-afterexperts.
Some firms have been successful in this
endeavorbyfocusingtheirpracticeinspeciic
markets inwhich they can truly excel.Byinding thatnichemarket,
theseirmshave foundthat itcanbebothmorerewardingandmore
proitable.Weallhavebooks,calculators,computers,collegedegrees,
and licenses, sohowcaneachirmdeterminewhatareas theywillbe
abletoexcelin?Followingisalistofquestionsthatmaybeposedwhen
tryingtodifferentiateyourcompanyfromthecompetition:
•Inwhatareascanweprovidestellarservicetoclients?
•Dowehaveuniqueexpertisewithaparticularbuildingsystem
ormaterial?
•Dowehaveuniqueexpertisewithaparticulartypeofbuilding?
•Doourengineershaveexpertiseinforensicdesign?Blastdesign?
•Isthereaparticularaspectofconstructionthatweknowmore
aboutthananyotherirm?
•Dowehavetheabilitytobemuchmoreresponsivethan
otherirms?
•Wouldpartneringwithaconstructionirmtododesign-build
workbebeneicial?
Also,consider,“time reallylieswhenyouarehaving fun”.Weeach
wantourcareertoberewarding.Oneofthewaysirmshavebeensuc-
cessfulistofocusontheareasof
practice,ortheclients,thatthey
reallyenjoy.
Breakingoutofthecommodity
boxrequireslookingatyourirm,
deciding what your strengths
are,andtheniguringoutaway
to capitalize on those strengths.
Bycomingupwithacompeti-
tive strategy that is unique to
your irm and the people in it,
and then strategically positioning
yourself in those areas with cli-
ents that know and appreciate
yourefforts,youcanbecomea
valued,sought-afterpartner.▪
