Box-Arrow Labels

When U.S. Secretary of State Collin Powell made a presentation to the United Nations
Security Council (2/5/03), he presented photographic evidence of Iraq's missile program.
Each of the photos had boxes with arrows coming from the bottom, identifying such
things as missile canisters and empty warheads. While Adobe Illustrator is my tool of
choice for such work, you can quickly and easily create such tidy labels in Photoshop.
STEP 1
Open your image. Not having access to spy satellite photos today, I'll use PhotoSpin's
image #0240018.
STEP 2
Start by adding the type layers so that you know how large to make the boxes.
Typically, you'll want to use a plain sans serif font, especially if the image will be
projected to an audience. (I've converted the background layer to a regular layer and
reduced its opacity so that the type is more visible. Convert background layers to regular
layers by simply changing the name of the layer in the Layers palette.)
STEP 3
Next use the Rectangular Shape tool add shape layers as the boxes. I suggest you add
each box directly below the associated text and link the layers.
STEP 4
In the Layers palette, make sure the layer for the box you first want to alter is active.
Open the Paths palette and you'll see the shape layer's vector mask is visible and
selected. Use the Add Anchor Point tool (one of the Pen tools) to add three anchor
points, rather close together, where you want to arrow to extend from the box.
STEP 5
Use the Direct Selection tool (whose icon is a hollow arrow) to drag the middle of your
anchor points to form the arrow. If the anchor points you added have direction lines, the
arrow will be slightly rounded. You can use the Convert Anchor Point tool (another of the
Pen tools) to convert the smooth anchor points to corner points. Simply click on the
point to convert it. (Similarly, if you want to convert a corner anchor point to a smooth
point, click and drag with the Convert Anchor Point tool.)
STEP 6
Since you can't stroke a vector mask's path, drag the shape layer's path to the New Path
button at the bottom of the Paths palette to duplicate it. Switch back to the Layers
palette and add a new layer, linking it to the shape layer. For complex illustrations,
consider creating a layer set for each type layer/shape layer/stroke layer combination.
STEP 6
Because you have only straight lines (unless you decided to use smooth anchor points
for the arrow), you can select stroke the new path using the Pencil tool and a
complimentary color.
