Introduction
What Is Organic Soil and Why Do You Want It?
Go organic.
That’s what you’ve heard over and over again for years. Organic produce and
products used to be found only in specialty shops and farm stands. Now,
mainstream groceries are building organic sections into their stores because of
heightened demand.
What is “organic”? There’s organic chemistry (the chemistry of carbon
compounds), letting thoughts and words flow organically (letting a story take its
own path at its own time), and organic gardening.
The word organic in gardening and growing means a system of gardening that
uses fertilizers and mulches made solely from animal and/or vegetable matter.
No chemicals, no pesticides, nothing synthetic. This type of food production is
based on maintaining and replenishing soil fertility – the ultimate recycling effort –
leading to healthier plants, produce and people!
And organic foods use minimal processing to preserve the integrity of the food
you eat.
But what can you do as a home gardener to produce organic vegetables and

Just as your digestive tract controls 80% of your immune system, good organic
soil determines the quality of your fruits and vegetables.
Let’s start with soil structure. Soil is more than just dirt. Its structure is a big
influence on how the soil performs in terms of drainage, water retention, and
nutrient absorption.
Good soil is a blend of …
Clay for water retention -- While you want some clay in your soil, too
much will keep water from draining properly which causes root rot. Too
much clay will prevent plants from growing and all you’ll end up with are
some nice terra cotta clumps you could use for pottery
Organic material for good nutrition -- Soil shouldn’t be made up of
mostly organic material because there isn’t enough substance to root the
plants or hold water in the root system. Plants need a strong foundation
and providing just organic matter without some clay or sand is like a home
built on quicksand, and

the water you use to drain away too rapidly. Sandy soil doesn’t produce
nutritious fruit or vegetables because of the lack of nutrients and wastes
