I’ve just got back from holiday
three days before this issue went
to press, and the first feature I
started to read, well almost, was
Martin Middlebrook’s...
He had me worried with all his talk
of National Geographic senior staff practically
pronouncing the stills image industry dead. Okay,
this is my interpretation, and indeed Martin’s and
Nat Geo’s , but it did get me thinking. The question
that was at the front of my mind was: have stills
become the poor relation to movies? Which, quite
naturally, led to: are we all going to be out of a job in
a few years time? If you are on the board of The
Carlyle Group then obviously not, having just spent
the thick end of $3 billion acquiring a controlling
interest in Getty, who themselves seem to be
emptying the piggy banks again and buying up more
of the imaging world’s picture libraries – they must
use the same business strategists as Tesco... every
image helps!
My feelings are that the still image is far from
dead. In fact, though for a good proportion of the
camera-buying public the technique and craft of
photography is as old fashioned as socks and
sandals, we are taking more pictures than ever,
and dare I say understanding their relevance and
narrative more clearly than ever before too. The
issue, for all pros, is that their fiscal value has
virtually evaporated in most cases. The time a
photographer provides is worth paying for, just not
the actual pictures? I’d be interested to hear your
thoughts on these questions.
